He was th...LT changed the way the game was played. He was the first of a new generation of outside LB; fast, quick and strong. He could chase down a play run to the opposite side of the field from the backside. Probably the first to do that consistently in the NFL. Teams had to block him even when they ran away from him. The redskins used to run the counter trey and he would eat it up. Mitch is right about the NO game. He was a warrior in that game wearing a shoulder harness and still dominanting the people blocking him. I guess LT was lucky he ended up playing for Parcells and Belichik, two men who knew not only how to get the best out of him as a person, but also how to use his skills to the maximum advantage.Crazed Giant fanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02195510243635947494noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4126451417395202308.post-44028447459506218782008-12-20T18:31:00.000-05:002008-12-20T18:31:00.000-05:00I just went on the Giants website. There aren't enough plaudits to go around. His g-d given talent and desire to be the best was an unbeatable combination. I do agree with Andy that if any of you on the blog were too young to see him play there are many videos that are available.

Having said that, I must reply to Andy's comments about Shockey. Because of the circumstances we will never know if a coach could have gotten the great production out of him that may or may not lie underneath. But I will say this, and to this point it is certainly true:

Part of being great is also the ability to "stay on the field." Shockey has never exhibited those qualities. Greatness is just not stats, it is the ability to go out every week in a sport of great attrition and do your job and do it extremely well. It also shows the innate ability to elevate your teammates to produce more than they could without him.

Of all the memories of LT that I have, the one that stands out is the game against New Orleans when LT played with a separated shoulder. He not only gutted it out, he even had 3 or 4 sacks in the game. That was about as an inspiring performance than I ever remember seeing any athlete ever accomplish.Mitchhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02151576898703507305noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4126451417395202308.post-49083746134766721702008-12-20T10:02:00.000-05:002008-12-20T10:02:00.000-05:00I'm down with Motown.Everything he said.I'll only ...I'm down with Motown.

Everything he said.

I'll only add - thanks. True Giant fans know expect great defenses as I was more excited when the defense took the field rather than the O back then. LT obviously had a lot to do with that.

I believe that he was not only the best I have ever seen in the sport but quite possibly the best athlete in pro sports. Up there with Jordan and Bo Jackson. He had it all, speed, quickness, unusual strength, intelligence, instincts, was just a freak of nature.

Although, I disagree with youon Shockey as I don't think he would have ever figured it out. Big difference in intelligence level between LT and Shockey. I won't disagree that they mis-used him but not to get him to a level of greatness.Motown Bluehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16218210984515633044noreply@blogger.com
