I usually pay little attention to these draft recaps. What was of note is that McShay said almost precisely what Wonder said about Phillips, that this was not a first rounder and that Tyrell Johnson was the better pick. Reese feels differently, and considering Reese's track record as a scout and GM in 2007, he will get the benefit of the doubt. The Giants rated Phillips not only as the best Safety in the draft but also very high on an absolute basis for talent, so that stands at odds with the evaluation of Wonder. If Phillips is the starter for the Giants in Game 1 that will be the first test to determine if the Giants did well.

One thing that I would like to note about McShay McKiper and the rest of McESPN is that this is the first time in my memory (which is admittedly quite short) that one of the mock drafts was actually RIGHT about whom the Giants would pick. I've never seen that before. It was both Kiper's and McShay's first mock draft that had the Giants taking Kenny Phillips.
Weird, I think.
i'll go with the giants braintrust; they know their team and who will fit best. part of their thinking, i believe, is that kenny phillips is more nfl ready and they need safety help this year, not 3 years down the line. the giants have also been excellent at reclamation projects, so manningham most likely will turn out fine and be that steal.
