In the past few weeks we have dissected Wide Receiver and to a lesser extent Linebacker. These are two of the Giants' biggest needs. But they have needs elsewhere. They will likely use the draft to bring a RB, TE, S, OL, CB .. namely every other position except DL, where they nuked it in free agency.
Wonder Commentary
Tight End
Pettigrew- Not as good as everyone thinks. Can block. Good for the Giants. If he is there at #29, take him.
Cook- Pass catching TE. 3rd Round Quality.
Nelson- 4th Rounder.
Coffman- Small, not fast enough.
Casey- No.
Ingram- 1st Round talent. Best in the draft, but all up to the Doctors. Your medical staff makes the determination on this one.
Beckum- Potential. 4th/5th rounder.
Guard
Robinson- LOVE HIM! Late 1st Rounder to early second rounder. If you can get him in mid to late second round it is stealing!
Johnson- Big Motherbrowner. Gigantic size. Good feet. Can he keep his weight down? If so, he can be great. Problem is that if he cannot, he'll balloon up to 400+ and be worthless to everyone except McDonalds shareholders.
Levitre- solid.
Urbik- late 4th/5th round
Canfield- late 4th/5th round
Vasquez- Some chance 5th/6th round.
Center
Mack- Not as good as Mangold. Good. Solid. Late 1st round, early 2nd rounder. Good for 10 years in the league.
Unger- same as Mack
Wood- Ok, not spectacular.
Caldwell- Interesting, could be good 3rd/4th round
Cornerback
Jenkins- Mistake taking him in 1st round, 2nd round quality. Not a shutdown corner.
Davis- Too risky. Not for me in the 1st round. Needs Cover 2, once again not a shutdown corner.
Butler- LOVE HIM! Best corner in the draft. He can browning cover, and he will stick his nose in to stop the run, even though he is small he is not afraid to do the dirty work.
ASmith- Great cover guy, not good on run support.
Moore- Sleeper at Safety.
SSmith- mediocre, middle to end of 3rd round.
Harris- mediocre.
Byrd- I Like him. Football player. Lacks speed.
DSmith- Has potential. Slow. 6th round flyer.
Running Back
CWells- warming up to him. Got healthier, stronger, faster. VG for Jets. Cold weather horse. Take him mid to late 1st round, good compliment to Reggie Bush if Saints interested.
Moreno- warming up to him as well. Tweener. HB? FB? Neither?
DBrown- YES YES YES! Giants take him #29. Like Curtis Martin with good hands. Love him!
McCoy- No.
Greene- Love him! Late second round is stealing him.
MWells- No.
ABrown- Great 3rd round pick. Underrated. Steal in the third round, lots of potential.
Jennings- Could be great, runs upright, Eric Dickerson. (Take your chances on injuries with that style?)
Note how Wonder did not 'seemingly' review many in each of these positions. The crop is thin at most of these positions and there was not much to say after the first handful of names. Even guys he likes or has in the first round, many would have been 2nd rounders last year. His ratings simply have to be pushed up because of the thinness of this draft. Just means less depth in numbers.

Slim Pickings

Just another reason to trade, trade, trade. From what I am hearing elsewhere to that this is a weak draft and there is no discernible difference between the top 10 through 20 in the first round.
If trade cannot be had, trade for a few of next years picks or trade for veteran O line depth. The more I think about it the more nervous I get if any of the front five get hurt. Boothe and Whimper actually scare the Brown out of me.
Forget Boothe and Whimper. Diehl vs D Ware scares me. An upgrade at LT would let us slide Diehl back to his natural position at guard and would provide better depth on the OL.
Don't get me wrong - I love what Diehl has done for us, but he would be a beast at guard if we can draft a natural LT.
Andy - What are wonder's feeling on the OT draft class? Think anyone will be around for us to take at 29? or should we look to move up and grab one in the top 20?
This is a wack year for RB's in the draft. Next year is gonna be huge. As a USC fan, and a recent alum, I have essentially scouted the hell out of the Trojan football team and I gotta say... next year, between 1 and 3 RB's will be available from SC. Stafon Johnson will definitely be coming into the draft (reminds me of Marion Barber the way he bounces off tackles), CJ Gable might be entering the draft (a lot like Derrick Ward, but with more speed) and maybe just maybe... Joe McKnight (like Reggie Bush but a bit bigger and better hands). Also because these three studs share a backfield, they will all be undervalued except for McKnight who has been receiving tremendous buzz since high school. Stafon Johnson is the kinda guy we could pick up in the second round next year and get tremendous value for. Jacobs gets banged up, so having another big physical back would be very useful, especially one like Johnson who is ENTIRELY NFL ready. Johnson is patient and bursts through holes in the line. He is also great at shedding tackles and plowing through LB's for more yards. This brings me back to a frequent point that I make... at USC, practice and making the starting squad, provides more competition and NFL style experience than most NCAA teams' actual schedules. In practice every day, this guy was faced with Rey Maualuga, Brian Cushing and Clay Matthews, three future NFL stars... not to mention he had to compete for his starting job with CJ Gable, Joe McKnight, Marc Tyler and Allen Bradford, who will all be playing on sundays, and will all probably be starters or even stars (in the case of Mcknight, Tyler and Gable). This year, I think we should take whatever RB we can get in the third round. We still have Jacobs, Bradshaw and Ware (who has shown promise every time we've seen him). Also USC has a fullback coming out in one or two years named Stanley Havili... THIS GUY IS THE TRUTH! He is a FB who can run the ball like a HB, catch the ball and score TD's like a TE/WR and block like a bastard. He's the most complete player I've seen in a long time. For the Giants, he would be perfect. I feel like for right now we are set at running back and there are more interesting options in drafts future. I want Braylon Edwards, a backup/understudy O-liner who can take over for Kareem eventually, a new safety and a corner. Therefore, if we get braylon edwards and lose our first round pick or our first second rounder, I say we pick up Robinson at guard if we can. Then take A Smith at corner or William Moore at safety... then A Brown at RB... and then fill out our depth chart from there. Honestly, I'm a big fan of drafting corners and safeties. I feel like in the league as it was in the 80's and 90's parcells was dead on about collecting LB's. Nowadays, I like collecting defensive backs. These guys have the hardest position on the field, especially with all the big play receivers in the game today. It's good to be able to get young guys in there with fresh legs, rotating in and out. If we learn anything other than BLITZ BABY BLITZ from our former D-coordinator, it should be this. D-backs give you an edge in everything. A qb steps back into the pocket... he can't find anyone... BAM! Corners are to pass rushers what O-liners are to QB's... they buy the d-line time. Honestly, if all of our top targets are gone in the first round and we don't have a need at WR (if we get B. Edwards) I would say, grab a S/CB in the first round again. The last two years, it has worked out well.
Or an LB in the first round maybe... I just feel like if we don't have the best D in the league next year, and a WR who can be a deep threat, we failed this offseason.
Air Moreno as a FB? cant see it!!! Moreno's not a FB cant see it. This guy is a bonafide NFL HB
lunch special-
Nature- I hear you. Moreno looks fine as a HB to me as well. W/o speaking too much on Wonder's behalf, I would surmise that he is simply coming from the perspective that when you draft high/#1, you want to get the dominant pure player, not someone who has some of both. In this case, I see all Halfback.
Slater- tomorrow we are doing the rundown on OT. Most (if not all) of your questions will be answered there.
Re OL in general, I would not mind if we got ourselves a good Tackle high.
ya know, after consideration, no matter what... Heyward-Bey in the first round if we can. Just saw a whole bunch of clips of him burning D's, being physical, and for someone who is 6'2" he feels huge. I think we should hold on to our draft picks and hold on to our current receiving corps. Heyward-Bey could be a starter by W12, and a contribitor in W1-11 whenever he gets in the game. Good receiving corps come about when there is competition, then the cream rises to the top. We got a whole bunch of young, talented and hungry guys who all probably think right now, that they have THE SHOT, to become a star wide receiver with the New York Giants.
I think Reese knows he has choices. He is going to either get Edwards (very likely) or still get the choice of someone in the set of Nicks/Britt/HBey/Robiske. No, it is not likely that we see a #1 WR make the impact we want in 2009, but like you said, perhaps he can do something later in the season. Me? If they go WR, the best move is Edwards, or else draft someone tall like Barden or Turner in R3, using the other 4 picks in the first 3 rounds to get some OT depth, some LBer services for the next 10 years, another good Safety. I have a real problem with this endless parade of draft picks being thrown at WR. Maybe if necessity is the mother invention, we can see Moss2Smith2Manningham3 pay dividends. Maybe I am missing something, but Reese did not mention Moss by name and he was productive for the team last season. This commentary would normally be part of a post where we could kick it around, but there is too much stuff to jam in before Draft Day. The team is very close to having all the pieces together, and arguably had the pieces together 3 months ago as well.
