Ultimatenyg blog monday night: "The main problem this evening was that the anchor of the defense (its pass rush) was not present. We had seen this to a degree in the Bengals game, when the blitz was not effective."
Schwartz NY Post: "If there is anything to sweat, it's a defense that is starting to feel the after-effects of losing its most gifted lineman, Osi Umenyiora. The Giants haven't hit the opposing quarterback in two games."
Tom Coughlin (re the DL pass rush): "There has to be a lot of self-analysis there."
Is it just effort? The guess is that maybe someone on the defense is giving away a 'tell' when the team (rushes/) blitzes the QB*, making it far easier for the opposing offense to be efficient in their protections.
Publicly, the Giants are talking about lack of execution, lack of being physical and opposing teams using 3 and 5 step drops. But ONLY ONE HURRY, NO SACKS? From the #32 rated offense??... there has to be more.
*About 70% of the way thru, Schwartz implies that the self-analysis that Coughlin was referring to may very well have been Cleveland figuring out what the Bengals figured out on the blitz pickups. Let's hope the Giants have that ironed out.

I guess it is also possible that we are now seeing the effects of a season without Osi and Michael. Perhaps other teams have figured out what they need to do to stop Tuck and Kiwanuka. I love those guys, but do you think it is possible that we were too high on them and maybe they are finally being exposed by other teams?
I think that Kiwanuka is still hampered by the sprained ankle he sustained in Week 1 on the last play of the game, and you can see that Tuck is getting double & triple teamed. Spags probably will have to turn up the pressure from the safeties and corners to compensate. I am very concerned about our LB's....we are awfully thin now with our injuries there. I am very curious to see how Blackburn performs on Sunday. I like him but we have never really seen him for a whole game yet, but we will this week.
i believe the browns got some read because they picked everything up. of course, losing strahan and osi is huge, but the hurt is more about the guys behind tuck and kiwi not being as good. we need a 3rd de to make a consistent impact.
i think blackburn will do fine athletically, but we will miss pierce's playcall reactions. seems wilkerson is never healthy--kehl will take over.

The Giants have always rose & fallen with the Defense.
We are now very thin and possibly vulnerable at LB, as long as Pierce is hurt....I don't understand why Reese gas not addressed this issus. The offense is as strong as its been in years,
we need to bolster the D.
LB has been neglected for way too long- Armstead was an 8th rounder, Barrow and Pierce were picked up through free agency. Byron Hunt and Andy Headen could start for this team.
LB will be missing the game tomorrow. But not a big deal, I think. We are enough to beat the 49ers. Looking forward to a big win there. GO! Giants! Found some cool widgets at statbeast.com. Check it there.
