NY Giants free agency news and items

1) David Carr is visiting the Gmen. I like the move. I thought Carr had enough skill to get the job done, but was with teams that were flawed (Texans) and forced him to do more than he could (Panthers backup too quickly in starting role/injured). The Giants offense has all the pieces of the puzzle (excepting a very good LT), so we do not need a tremendous backup QB to keep us competitive. Remember that the Giants offense does not ask the QB to do everything. Schwartz refers to the sack numbers this guy took- he will be able to improve on that because he will get much better protection and will not be asked to stay in the pocket with the ball forever. I suspect he was not the Giants' first choice because he comes with a price tag. But now that it is 12 days into free agency, that price may have dropped enough to make him more value than before.

2) The Daily News does some salary cap math for us. Very good to read these items to understand where it all goes. Quick summary is that there is really only around 10M-11M left, not ~21M. Reese will need that money to up the antes on Strahan, Umenyiora and Burress.

I think the Signing of Carr is an excellent idea. Although I like Harrington better, Carr would be a good choice. Wright has nothing to offer even holding a clip board as far as I know and the hefty Lefty will never see time behind the center in a real game. The difference between another super bowl and .500 could be a few games were Eli is hurt. So far we have been lucky and he played through some injuries. But what if he's out for a few games? We are done. Remember that the 72 Dolphins were QB'd by their backup most of the season, Earl Morall. Our Defense and running game can win a lot of games if the offense is managed correctly, I think Carr can do that and more. Plus he will add some pressure on Eli, these players are competitive and just having a guy around that can pitch them will make Eli sharper, it's human nature.

You could have written that post for me! Agreed on all points. Harrington wants to and deserves to start, so he would not come to the Giants... plus he is too expensive as well. As long as the price is right, Carr is a good choice.

Andy,

I do not like this move. I hope you are right. Although Eli has been durable, Carr fell out of favor in Houston and last year "Fossil" Testaverde and undrafted Matt Moore leap frogged ahead of him on the depth chart. I think because Chris Palmer is the quarterbacks coach is one of the main reasons Carr came to the Giants. Last year, I believe people scoffed at the idea of Palmer helping Eli. Well, we did win the Super Bowl. I can only hope Palmer can do the same with Carr.

Sometimes you need structure more than you need skill. By that I mean that when you are #3 or #2 on the depth chart and the coaching staff has 1M/yr invested in you as opposed to 7M/yr (Texans) or 3M/yr (Panthers), the patience and reclamation can happen easier. This contract is about rebuilding Carr as much as it is having him be a backup. Like I stated in the following post, the ONLY risk is the roster spot, because the cost of this QB contract is practically ZERO.
