Preseason ticket extortion, etc...

1) From Sunday, Phil Mushnick: NFL Extortion, KC Chiefs-style.

If you have an opinion to share, write a letter to

Commissioner Roger Goodell
National Football League
280 Park Avenue
New York, NY 10017

All that is necessary for the forces of NFL evil to win in the world is for enough good fans to do nothing.
Edmund Burke Ultimatenyg

2) Sintim and Beatty signed, one left.

3) Andrews and Peters hurt at Eagles camp. Not major, but not a help either. Everyone has injuries, deal with them.

4) Rich Seubert:

Q) What are your individual goals for this upcoming season?
A) My personal goal for this season is for the team to win. The only way you have fun in this business is if you win games, and my goal is for the team to do well. At this stage of my career, it's all team goals. My personal goal is to stay healthy and play well, but it's really for the team to win games, and a lot of them.

Q) Who's going to be the breakout player on the team this year?
A) Everyone can predict a receiver. You know, I think everyone has proved themselves, so you have to pick a rookie probably. So yeah, one of the rookies. It better be one of the rookies.

We just love the wisdom of a lineman. Anonymous team effort. Meat and potatoes. Win.

I haven't yet written to my congresspeople and senators about health-care, but I did respond to the charge to write to Dear Roger.

Here's the text of my submission:

Dear Mr. Goodell:

I have been watching NFL games since the early 1950’s when the Giants were beamed into my small, Massachusetts town from WTIC in Hartford. The pictures were black and white but the heroics on the field were HD, Cinerama, and IMAX all together in my imagination. I’ve been a fan ever since, and have been lucky enough to attend a lot of games because of the generosity of “friends with tickets”.
Today I’m very disappointed that money-making has so thoroughly overtaken dream-making on the NFL’s agenda. For the fans in the stands, the exorbitant ticket pricing and policies are keeping many of my friends away, and I’ll probably stay home with them. Moving the games to the evening is even more of a turn-off. (By the time I get home in the wee hours of the morning my wife has turned out the lights hours ago.) And even on TV, the night games stretch my patience and my attention span.
We all understand the stupidity of Plaxico Burress shooting himself in the leg. The NFL is shooting itself in the foot. Please take a step back, take a look, and make some changes before this great game goes down the tube.

"those wishing to purchase single-game tickets to the team's biggest-draw home games this season -- against the Cowboys and Steelers -- must. . . buy an equal number of same-priced tickets to one of the Chiefs' two preseason home 'games'. . . "

Wow, that's wild.

Okay, if I use the forum of a Giants blog to pay respects to Jim Johnson?

To close the circle from Eagles to Giants, anybody who hasn't read it, check out this amazing Atlantic Monthly article from back in October 2008: Distant Replay. In which the great reporter Mark Bowden, who wrote that recent book about the 1958 championship game, got Andy Reid to sit down, watch coaches' film of that game, and analyze it. It's insanely fascinating.

Russ- the distant replay link was not good, it was GREAT. I have always felt that the NFL Films Library is the most poorly marketed treasure chest of entertainment ever. They could have a 30 minute show every week on ESPN or NFL Network where they get a head coach or former head coach or def/off coordinator and have them revisit these old games, and even some newer ones. Can I patent that idea?

There's gotta be a way to "monetize," as they say, that idea, Andy. I'd love to see something like that.
