Chris Canty and the Defensive Line

How aggressively do the Giants go after Chris Canty in the wake of Rocky Bernard being signed? What are the chances of the Giants signing him?

Pros:
1) The perfect mix of age (26) and experience (4 yrs)
2) Able to play both DE and DT well
3) Cofield and Robbins both underwent arthroscopic knee surgery this winter, so need for depth important
4) Canty grew up in NY (Bronx) and would like to come back here, all else equal
5) Best free agent DL out there (next to Haynesworth)
6) You can never have enough good defensive linemen, because every single dressed player gets snaps in the rotation
7) Lack of pressure up the middle in second half of season a big reason why the Giants want to upgrade the DL
8) Kiwi did not have the year we expected of him, and Canty can line up at DE

Cons:
1) It's always the money, and this signing won't come cheap
2) Bernard's signing clearly alleviates the need for depth
3) Plenty of other teams strongly interested in him
4) Given that Boley is a 5yr/25M signing, Reese still has not made the big ticket free agent signing
5) With Osi back, Tuck can rush inside and give the push up the middle that was missing
6) Osi, Kiwi, Tuck, Robbins, Bernard, Cofield, Tollefson, Alford (and Henderson, Douzable, Bryant, Clark) make for a pretty crowded roster and enough competition

Summary: the Bernard signing really lowered the chances for this signing, but Canty wanted to play here... he would already be out of town visiting the next team by now if not for his interest in returning to NY. It still looks like Canty will play somewhere else, but all Reese has to do is offer him numbers in the vacinity of Smith and he will be in blue this season. It is up to Reese.. we'll respect his judgment.

This how Mel Kiper rates the draft. Whether you agree with the order is immaterial, because these will probably be the top players drafted.

Player Yr. Pos. School
1. Aaron Curry Sr. LB Wake Forest
2. Michael Crabtree So. WR Texas Tech
3. Matthew Stafford Jr. QB Georgia
4. Jason Smith Sr. OT Baylor
5. Mark Sanchez Jr. QB USC
6. Eugene Monroe Sr. OT Virginia
7. Jeremy Maclin So. WR Missouri
8. B.J. Raji Sr. DT Boston College
9. Brian Orakpo Sr. DE Texas
10. Aaron Maybin So. DE Penn St.
11. Andre Smith Jr. OT Alabama
12. Everette Brown Jr. DE Florida St.
13. Tyson Jackson Sr. DE LSU
14. Percy Harvin Jr. WR Florida
15. Malcolm Jenkins Sr. CB Ohio State
16. Vontae Davis Jr. CB Illinois
17. Clay Matthews Sr. LB USC
18. Chris "Beanie" Wells Sr. RB Ohio St.
19. Knowshown Moreno So. RB Georgia
20. Brandon Pettigrew Sr. TE Oklahoma St.
21. Brian Cushing Sr. LB USC
22. Darrius Heyward-Bey So. WR Maryland
23. Larry English Sr. LB No. Illinois
24. Peria Jerry Sr. DT Mississippi
25. Michael Oher Sr. OT Mississippi
26. Rey Maualuga Sr. LB USC

There are:
5 LB
4 DE
4 OT
4 WR
2 DT
2 CB
2 RB
2 QB
1 TE

This breaks pretty well for us given that the top 4 positions in terms of numbers are also positions of need for us. Unless we make a move up for a player Reese really wants...we can be assured of drafting a player who will help us in the future.

There is zero chance we'll sign Canty after signing Rocky. Price was too high for Canty at 8m per, no way that Reese was going to pay that, especially after slightly overpaying for Boley.

I'm really hoping we can get Hey-Bey int the draft, good size and game breaking speed.

I hope Reese doesn't let cheapness
decide our DL for 2009 and settle for Rocky over Canty.

Depth and versatility is why they should sign Canty. Remember, in XLII we had Strahan, Osi, and Tuck who excelled in both run and pass. Kiwi didn't demonstrate enough power in the run support and he may be better suited as a hybrid DE/OLB. Canty can line up inside and create mismatches to free up Osi or Tuck off the edge. Kiwi cannot.

Reese has some cap money, why Canty sign him?

Bob said...

Motown, you are 100% right.
We won SBXLII due to a superb D line. We need to rebuild another great D line. Rocky looks like a nice backup. Canty however is a game breaker.

Our D line was adequate early in 2008, but weak late in the season.
Gerry, open your wallet, please.

We're not getting Canty, He left Jersey and is on his way to Seattle. We're not seeing any more new DL this year until the draft.

Craig, where did you hear that? Ralph Vacchiano had something from 11AM saying his agents has him still visiting with the Giants.

11:35AM Garafolo:
"on to DE/DL Chris Canty, whose visit is continuing this morning. And apparently, it's just as intense on the Giants' end as it was before Bernard signed."

still nothing new, but the press gazette story was from late Saturday, the Vac and Garafolo stuff is the latest stuff, that he is still talking with the Giants. It could be that both are true, that the giants are below the offer and that he is going on a flight tonight. As long as he is in NJ he has a shot.

The Giants went into FA 33mil under (thank you Darcy Johnson for the 7.2m bump up). They've signed Jacobs, Boley and Rocky. I don't know what the exact amount of cap space they've used is, but I'd guess at least half. So best guesstimate is that we have 16-17 left. We still have do Eli's extension and the draft. Canty's 8m per, even if they can get it down to 4-5 on the cap doesn't leave room for both Eli's extension and a 1st round + 2 2nd round draft picks. The only way they can sign Canty is to get it done for less than 3 on the cap, I really don't think thats possible, but who knows, I'm shocked he's still there, he must really want to play for the Gmen bad.

Giants and Canty are obviously closer than ANYONE thinks ... from Garafolo:

"3:08 p.m. UPDATE Someone in the know said the gap is in guarantees and structure and that the sides are close on overall value. Not sure how far apart on guarantees, but that sounds like a gulf that could be bridged."

Brian said...

Wow, just read that on Garafolo's blog. The Gmen have to be doing some cap wizardry!

Brian said...

Wow, they signed him, http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2009/03/new_york_giants_agree_to_terms.html

I love being wrong like this!

Signing Canty, Rocky, & Boley.
I can't freaking believe it. Who
called Reese a cheapskate ?

Ok, now we've got a REAL D.

Need to work on a stud WR & resigning Ward.

Can't wait for the season to start.

Now the rumors will start flying about trades .

Reese broke the bank. Last year he miscalculated a little bit on guys like Mitchell, and he probably regretted that. I love a killer D.

more pluses than minus with canty in my eyes. i see him playing a lot of dt especially in the pass rush situations. also de on runs. now we have kiwi, tuck, canty, osi on passing downs. wow! oh, yeah, and boley covering guys. wonder if this means pierce might get some breathers on 3rd and 10 or more with boley taking his place.
