LBer/LBer/LBer

Hope springs eternal. This is said with ALL HONESTY... I would not care if the Giants drafted LB/LB/LB with the first 3 picks in round 1 and round 2 come late April. Throw in a Safety for Craig if we don't get a cheaper upgrade in the next wave of free agents. STARVE GILBROWN of any and all talent, he'll just waste the damn thing anyway. Serial underachiever. 1950's-1960's flashback: I can see
Tuck/Osi/Canty/Robbins/Kiwi/Boley/Pierce/Webster/Ross/Phillips/#1/#2 LBers coming off the field and telling Gilbrown and Manning: "Just hold'em until we can get in there again."

You think I'm mad? Here is the plan.

STEP 1: Draft LBer with the first 3 picks, Safety and Corner with the next 6 picks. Draft a RB with the last pick as fodder for Training camp handoffs.

STEP 2: Gilbrown hands the ball off to Jacobs wide right enough times for a loss of 2yards to have us lose three of the first four games. 1-3.

STEP 3: The defense begins clicking on all 8 cylinders.

STEP 4: Gilbrown hands the ball off to Jacobs inside the tackles and he gains +2 yards per carry because the defense has 12 men in the box. By the time the game is over we'll have enough field position to win the game 9-0 after 3 failed red zone attempts.

STEP 5: We finish 13-3 with momentum into the playoffs.

STEP 6: Eli still can't throw in the wind of January, the offense still gets 2 yards per play, but it doesn't matter, as the defense creates more than enough turnovers and negative yardage.

STEP 7: We emulate the '85 Bears and '00 Ravens by winning a Super Bowl with suffocating defense and an offense that no one remembers who played WR. Sheridan is carried off the field on the shoulders of Tuck and Osi. Gilbrown is interviewed for a head coaching job in the Arena League but gets rejected.

After reading more into this acquisition something tells me the Haynesworth push may have been a tactical ploy:

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/story/11444378

The above article and many others on the web point to the Haynesworth deal by the irresponsible Snyder opening the door for the Reese. The deadskins supposedly had an offer out there for Canty before they landed fat Albert. Per Mosley at ESPN:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3944397

TC has had a man crush since a fellow Parcells disciple coached him at UVA.

Was Reese really interested in Haynesworth or was he stirring the pot to gain 2 objectives: raise the price of Haynesworth and put pressure on Danny boy Synder to put all chips in to get Haynesworth?

Andy, you are as bitter as I am about out beloved OC. Reese should suffocate Gilbrown out of his job by not giving him any new toys to play with from the draft. Let the tradition of a dominating Giant defenses win a championship. They should easily get to immediate contributors on defense from their draft position.

Does anybody else wonder if Spags is now licking his chops at what could have been his defense? If that guy didn't look like a genius before, imagine what he would have been able to do with these latest additions.

Let's get back to reality boys !

We now have a killer D and an anemic O. Reality is we WILL NEED TO SCORE SOME TD's TO GET THRU THE PLAYOFFS. If nothing else than to give the D a rest.

As much as I HATE Gillbrown, we now need to get moving on getting Eli a strong WR to get this offense moving again. Remember we led the NFC in pts/game prior to losing Burress. Even with Gillbrown as OC. Replace Burress & we can do it again with our O line.

It amazes me that Reese is so aggressive now in free agency, while not correcting our biggest problem.......Gillbrown.

BTW, have you considered that Reese
may have felt compelled to take the recent actions due to several uncertainties on our DL..ie Osi's knee is not game tested, Robbins physical condition, Cofield's knee, & Kiwi's lackluster end year performance.

Btw, the 2nd comment about Spags was not made by me...must be some computer glitch

LB/LB/LB...

Andy...you sound like the old SNL routine. Cheeburger/Cheeburger/Cheeburger...

I thought I was dreaming when I found out we signed Canty. I posted and then deleted because I felt I was gushing too much.

Andy I agree that this Defense has the potential to be a reincarnation of the '00 Ravens, '86 Giants or even the famed '85 Bears. I am that excited.

We won in 2007 because of our Defense. Last season we were obviously still winning, but we wore down at the end because with the retirement of Strahan and the injury to Osi it became too much to overcome.

Reese and company know that we are young enough to still dominate on D so it became paramount to re-fortify the troops. This was brilliant, and Reese is definitely climbing up the ladder and is without a doubt one of the top 3 GM's in the league.

in order for us to have completely dominate d we need a superior smashmouth lb against the run--we have two young fleetfoots in boley and kehl but they are not crushers--and also another safety [or two if we don't get butler back]. i'm also a little leary about the impact of the injuries and how well the players come back.

you guys are way over-the-top too hard on gilbride--not that i'm a big fan of his at all, he's just not the devil or completely incompetent. the giants had one of the better offenses in the league. yes, they suffered w/o plax and did not adjust enough, but the brain trust will have an entire preseason to do so now. i expect us to see what manningham can do. i also expect the draft to pick up a wr or two, ot, te, and maybe even a og/oc.

Ha ha thanks Andy, funny thing is that we've pretty much been doing that last two years, we only got Bradshaw, Manningham, Andre Woodson, Smith, Boss, and Koets (who?). Only 6 offensive picks out of 15, and only Smith and Manningham were in the first 4 rounds.

By the end of the year i read a couple of times Ol' Hickory (TC) was upset with the play calling so maybe he'll be lookin over his shoulder all year.

I got an idea that i dont think will happen, Devery Henderson, has a 99 speed rating in madden 09 haha. He was play making ability and definatly require attention by a defense. Him and Marques Colston are the same player pretty much and New Orleans went with Colston so its not like he cant play. Same idea with Boley in Atlanta, just didnt fit in

I gotta say Andy, I almost always agree with you but here I must respectfully disagree. I feel like I'm beginning to understand Reese's strategy this offseason and I strongly approve of his approach. It seems as though we are addressing the defense through free agency for the most part and will then take on the offense in the draft. I do agree that one of our first three picks should be an LBer but I still think we need to see a WR and an o-liner. Our O-line was the foundation of our offense during the successful part of our season, at the end Kareem McKenzie was on his last legs so when teams were stacking 8 men in the box it started to work cuz kareem was either hobbled or not playing. Remember that when we played B'more they were stacking 8 men in the box a lot and it STILL didn't work. Protection is so important, one of our first three picks needs to be an O-liner. Also we need another WR, Hakeem Nicks comes to mind. However, our team is still strong, if they started playing tomorrow, they would be one of the best in the NFL. Therefore, what we need to do is address our three biggest needs WR, LB and OL with value as our primary decision-maker. If Rey Maualuga is available at our pick in the first round, we take him and then address WR and OL in the second round. If Rey has been taken and Hakeem Nicks is available in the first round, or if we feel like he will still be there in the second round, we wait and do that. The thing I love about Reese's history with the draft has been his ability to use rounds 2-4 to get the best value available. So that being said if there is a real steal at CB or safety or LB in the second or third rounds, we should look to that over WR and OT (but only if there's a real prime value pick available).

Gillbrown does suck and has proven himself to be a slow learner. That being said, I have seen enough quality playcalling from him to feel like if the team is confident and the right pieces are in place, he can be effective (not great but effective). I feel like he has underutilized a lot of talent but with Ward, Toomer and Plax gone, he literally won't be able to do that anymore. Bradshaw will move up to #2 on the depth chart and Steve Smith will have to start. Mark my words, Steve Smith is the new TJ Housh. We should be glad the giants didn't bring him in because smith is younger, cheaper and even though he is not as speedy, has the hands of another famous Steve Smith. We still need fresh blood at the position to keep competition alive. At WR, competition is your lifeblood, even if we take a WR at the end of the second round or in the third round, it'll be good for our entire corps to get another guy in there. That being said, wouldn't it be nice to have a player like Nicks in there who scored 12 TD's and caught for 1200 yards on a team with three QB's (who all saw the field) only one of whom has a prayer of ever seeing an NFL game from the field (and even then, undoubtedly the sideline).

Maulaga wont drop to us, Nicks may or may not drop to us. He will not be around 2nd rd 14th. Hixon and Smith are not number 1s and our offense will fall apart with everyone being able to be single covered. We have drafted a WR 2-3 rd last 3 years, making it 4 wont do anything for the team.

I still think if for OL we are looking for only depth we can wait until later.

Andrew, I agree with EVERYTHING you say. That blog post was simple admiration for Reese going after defensive needs in free agency. Reese is terrific. And he is such an intelligent planner.. the draft is strong in WR/OT/and even some LBers. So he gets the DL taken care of, gets some speed at LB and can have flexibility to get ONE OF ALL THREE of the WR/OT/LB. When I said LB/LB/LB that was simply my frustration with not having gone #1 for LBer since Carl Banks, and how much I want to see us keep emphasizing defense over WR. I am a realist too. I know this game has changed since Parcells said, LBers- I collect'em. Yet there he is getting guys like 3-4 LBer DeMarcus Ware and drafting McGinest, just to name a few. He drafted Canty too. So as much as the game has changed and you need a big time WR in order to play FB in 2009, the game is still won with defense.

Wonder really likes Nicks, and yes Maualuga is not dropping very far at all.

Re Reese acting on Bernard and Canty because of the knee scopes on Cofield and Robbins, we did mention that on Sunday morning as a "pro" for why Reese would have a reason to get Canty. Agreed.

In 2007 the best unit on the team was the DL and we won a title. In 2008 the best unit on the team was the OL and Gilbrown wasted it. Is that a simple ... too simple... analysis? Perhaps. But the way I see it, if Reese had gotten Gilbrown 3 toys, once again we would be in the exact same position as 2008, and that should not get anyone TOO excited. Yes, I just like everyone want to see a rockstar like Crabtree burning defenses when they go 8 men in the box. But the problem is what we know very well, that Gilbrown can adjust as fast as needed to changes in looks/personnel, and he does not step on the jugular. As long as that is the case, he cannot be trusted to have all the toys. He needs a few to function, but the better unit needs to be on defense. At least they play nicely with their toys.
