Rhett Bomar was cut from the NY Giants. First let's listen to the words of Tom Coughlin: "I think you have to make a very difficult call when you decide to go with two (quarterbacks). That roster spot can be utilized by a worthy player, a player that deserves to be on your team. We’ve found, as we go forward with 32 teams, that it’s very difficult later on to find a quality player, a guy that can come in and help if you need one. So you are much better off to try to protect those that you have that are currently on your squad that can play the game at a high level. You’re more inclined to try to do whatever you can to take care of your roster and keep as many good players as you can."
This is the era of free agency, salary caps, resources, roster spots, WIN NOW. The operative word in the explanation from Coughlin is "currently." Everyone understands that Bomar was not going to be contributing to the team in 2009 in any meaningful way, especially considering that Manning has played in 71 straight games and that Carr is a capable backup.
But consider these words from a very knowledgeable contributor to this blog, Marvelous, who said early yesterday (before the cuts): "He has it ALL. I LOVE his arm, guts, talent. Do you see his running? Like a wounded BULL. Power, speed, authority, gumption. The full package. He is going nowhere. Carr has one thing on him-experience. Other than that, NOTHING. He is a talent, the Giant scouts knew it. He throws, releases quicker than MOST NFL QB's NOW. Sturdy, confident and raring to go. He's a keeper."
Except the Giants did not keep him. Make no mistake, the Giants want him back on the practice squad. IF the Giants are able "sneak" (a word chosen by more than a few media accounts) him back onto the practice squad, they will do so.
So the real question is: is it worth the risk to expose a guy you like just to have that extra roster spot? The Giants answer was yes. They enjoyed the fact that they could carry only 2 QBs on the roster last season. It certainly is a strategic advantage. And if Bomar clears waivers it is a great move. This NY Giants blogger feels that the risk was too great, because you must make a commitment to a QB like this, to groom him. If the position were different, like a WR or an OL or what have you, we could certainly understand and not bother discussing it. But QB is different. QBs can make or break a franchise.
Why is Bomar different? What makes him worthy of protecting? The answer here is that quick release. You cannot teach that. Either you have it or you do not.
Carr is under a 1 year contract and he may look to go elsewhere next season. Everyone knows how important QB is to a roster- these guys do not grow on trees. Bomar is a cheap call option. Parcells: "It’s a very easy thing to say, ‘Go get a backup quarterback.’ Now tell me where to get them. You just can’t dial them up."

The Rhett Bomar cut

Having read Vacchiano's beat report, I'm also convinced the GMen were hiding Bomar. A true talent worth at least draft picks in the future. Next year I think he'll shine after we deal Carr out
Chris, the amount of poker that is played in the NFL would not surprise the cynical and streetwise among us. Why did the Giants not even PLAY Bomar in G2 and G3 of preseason? Because they are trying to "sneak" him through.
qbs are difficult to sneak, especially with the internet. i mean look at all our talk on this blog! i think lots of teams are starting to go the way of 2 qbs, so that might help. we'll see.
Firstly, the NYG made a point when they drafted Woodson, that they wanted to slowly groom a QB for the future. So, now we had a much better talent than Woodson and let them both go. So much for the long term VU & long term player development.
And why the hel* do we need seven wideouts, when we have a great pass catching TE who is underutilized ? Yeah, I heard about trying to trade Moss for a safety or LB. I'm sure there are a lot of teams willing to give a great safety or LB for a wideout who barely made the team.
Oh yeah, I heard the story about hiding Bomar & the practice squad.
If we think pretty highly of him,
its a dumb risk. Young talented QB's are hard to come by, didn't we learn that yet ? There are too many smart scouts around & smart guys like Belechek who might pick off Bomar. What happens next year if Carr keeps playing well & gets a better offer ? What do we have for a backup then ?
Do we go running out into free agency like we did with CC Brown ?
That worked out real well (not exactly)
Mike Garafalo...
The Giants began the process of compiling their eight-man practice squad at noon on Sunday when players who were let go on Saturday officially cleared waivers.
Among those signed were:
CB DeAndre Wright: the team's sixth-round pick in April
S Sha'reff Rashad: an undrafted free agent from Central Florida
S Vince Anderson: undrafted from Webber International (Fla.)
DT Anthony Bryant: a former sixth-round pick of the Buccaneers from Alabama
***
DE Maurice Evans, a highly regarded undrafted free agent from Penn State who had an impressive camp and preseason, was claimed by the Buccaneers and is now on their active roster, his agent said via e-mail. That's a disappointment for the Giants, though they probably expected he wouldn't make it through.
LB Kenny Ingram, an undrafted free agent from Florida State, was not signed and is on his way back to Florida. But he was told he might be called back in the near future.
Still waiting to hear whether QB Rhett Bomar cleared waivers.
More to come.
Wonder on the Safeties who were cut:
(1) for potential, Cook (Jets)
(2) for solid/dependable Kaes (Panthers) or Pollard (Chiefs)
Bob, I agree re Bomar. Why invest a fifth rd pick on a project QB, as they were fully aware of, given that you have holes at Safety and lack depth on the OL. You would think before the draft that they would consider down the road when cut time arrives they had to pick between a player than can contribute now versus a QB project. The gamble to me is too big to place him through waivers for the PS.
Sorry to see Evans claimed but I projected his upside is too great for such a valuable position to clear waivers.
Twist of fate, Alex Smith cut by the Patriots is being looked over by the Gmen after trading Matthews to the Patriots. Just think it will come down to dollars with Smith as Darcy is in the same mold....receiving TE but weakness in blocking.
I agree with Bob & Motown Blue on Bomar. It is an incredible risk that the Giants are taking. The Giants did their best to try and hide Bomar ( as Andy stated previously) ...it is anyone's guess if he clears waivers.
The 7 receivers being kept surprised me. But remember, there is another cut to be made when Boley become eligible in Week 2.
We all discussed ad infinitum in the off season how we were probably looking at the end of Fred Robbins career. I think it is remarkable and a great testament to Robbins that he has made it back from this high risk surgery. Kudos to him and great for the Giants.
Reports have Bomar clearing waivers and GMen signing him to practice squad. Apparently, the gamble worked.

Bomar cleared and has been added to PS. Still a risk that he could be claimed later however.
Agree with Wonder on Pollard as I hope they bring him in quickly as you all know how nervous I am about the Safety depth. There is also Forney, Guard from SD, as well as Chambers, Guard from Minny?.
