New York Giants 21 Pittsburgh Steelers 14

Had it all the way. Not. Let's see if we can recap the midgame rants in one sentence: Gilbride, you s***.

We are midway through the season, Jacobs has already lost that 1/4 or 1/2 step I mentioned, and now he is a tremendous liability in short yardage and the red zone. Not to mention how predictable the playcalling is on top of that. There might as well be a neon sign blinking above his head> "IT'S GOING TO ME, GUYS!" When Ward started getting more touches in the latter part of the second half, you could see the offense stop the stagnation. Like everyone has commented here numerous times, this is no KNOCK on Jacobs. It is on Gilbride's delusional use of him when it is not working. And some of this he should have understood from the film room in NJ, not on Heinz Field. Jacobs matches well vs the softie defenses who are not ready for a fight. Against a physical team like the Steelers you still need to use him but not at the expense of Ward and/or Bradshaw. And will someone tell Gilbride to practice the dumpoff pass to the RB outlet on the checkdown? Ward and Bradshaw can kill teams like this with that stuff.

The officiating was HORRENDOUS. I will not go into the horrors of how we almost got completely screwed by the refs, because it would take a novella to list them all. Just understand that Gilbride's incompetence makes these penalties really hurt, and if we lose a playoff game (or a bye or a playoff spot) because of it, it will NOT be about the penalties, it will be about Gilbride putting us in a position where the penalties CAN cost you.

Once again, the defense played valiantly. Butler giveth (TD) and taketh away (hit for INT by Kehl). The Steeler offensive line was seriously exposed by our pass rush and blitz. GOOD. Pierce was all over the field, he looked like he was back. If I were to mention all of the good players in today's game from the defense it would be too lengthy. But at least let's give a special shout out to unsung Tollefson.

The Giants OL was fantastic. Same old story, Gilbride is dealt the most amazing hand in the world, he has the straight on 5 cards and checks. He can run the ball and he can pass the ball, but instead he does what is predictable so that the defense can have a decent chance at stopping the poor playcall. How many times did he violate the Ultimatenyg tell, running on second down and 10 or less in a normal game environment after a first down pass? (He did it at least THREE times that I can recall.) If we are calling the plays from 600 miles away, ya think the Steelers might know what is coming? Ya think?

By the time we reach near the end of the game and we have been to the red zone about 6 million times (okay, so this was the 6th), OMG,

PLAY ACTION!

OMG

A PASS TO YOUR TE!

I am shocked to find him wide open in the end zone. Surprise, surprise, surprise Sergeant Carter!

Please do me one favor. Do not credit Gilbride for turning it around on that last drive for the TD. Do not give him the credit for waking the F up. When I saw that smile on his face standing next to Manning, like, look at me, ain't we great?! I wanted to wipe that freaking smile right off his face. He is still so clueless, he probably thinks he coached a good game. SIX TRIPS TO THE RED ZONE???!!! YOU S***. You did exactly what we feared you would do, you piece of terd. The Giants won despite you. Take some responsibility for scoring and WINNING games instead of putting it ALL on the defense. YES, we have said it before and we will say it again and again. You can score 40 points EVERY SINGLE GAME. YOU COULD HAVE SCORED 40 today against a 'so-called' elite defense because your offense is loaded and it does not matter! It used to be Eli last year that was the weakest link, and we could understand how the offense would be as inconsistent as our emerging QB. NOW, it is Mr. Gilbride, Mr. Meathead, you are the weakest link on this offense and this team. Thank goodness we win despite you.

you couldnt be more right Gilbride is a Douche, i remember you saying Jacobs woulds slow down dead on with that prediction..... d fence has to bring that next week, and they need to work #21 in some more

Eli was very very good today. Made some really nice throws. 4th down throw to Amani deep down the sideline was his best throw of the year.
Kiwi was awsome. Secondary was very good also. The Gmen got at least 3 coverage sacks today.

Andy,

I can't even think of how many times i've disagreed with you. But this is just too much. Kevin Gilbride, for the jerk off that he is, has won many games now. He sticks to the balanced attack that the greatest Giants teams have ever played. Coughlin once preached of restoring the Giant pride, because he was there for it. As a wide reciever's coach for the 1990 team.

Today, the Giants are a team that maintains the balanced attack. One of the last few. A storied franchise that is begginning to return to its greatest strengths. A blitzing defense and an offense that gets it done.

But sometimes I read what you say and just can't help to think that its crap. You and I have already talked about how negative you can be. In an almost unrealistic way. You bitch and complain about how much Bradshaw should be used but you fail to realize that there is a good reason why he is 3RD on the depth chart. Perhaps it is a reason that you and I will never know, but one of the greatest running backs' coaches who ever lived may feel that that is where he belongs RIGHT NOW.

Gilbride is doing the best that he can right now. If you haven't noticed, it's working. 6-1 means something. Just like it did last year.

Again, I wonder about you and where your (and "Wonder") opinion comes from sometimes, as you rarely root for the team you say you are so dedicated to.

Either way, keep it safe.

Take care,

GoodPunk6

All very good points, and I agree with you completely. But the fact remains that the Giants are winning, and until they begin to lose, I say let Gilbride be Gilbride.

Mitch said...

To goodpunk6:

Andy does not need me to defend him but I have to respectfully disagree with you on Gilbride. The Giants win games in spite of him not because of him. Yes they have a balanced attack, but he does not use his personnel wisely. The Giants should be scoring more with all the talent they have. They won against Pittsburg because of a botched snap by the Steelers that caused a game-tying safety, some remarkable patience from the Giants' offense some smothering Defense from the front four and one more clutch drive from their Comeback Quarterback, Eli Manning, the defending champs somehow managed to turn a likely defeat into an impressive 21-14 victory Sunday.
Also how refreshing it was to watch Spagnuolo keep the pressure on instead of going into a "prevent defense" Kudos to Spags.

hey goodpunk6 i can understand where you coming from but Andy is the same type of fan i am, he over analyzes the game play by play... second dude GILBRIDE sucks its nothing you can say to me that changes my mind on that...amani toomer had to make a sick catch to save the horrible play calling...i dont know if you just like football or if you know X's and O's cause dude gilbride is predictable...to damn predictable, he doesn't KNOW how to use the TE in his office...and fvck a depth chart, I go by what I see, BRADSHAW is a better RUNNER than JACOBS...let me name some former second and third string running backs..PREIST HOLMES,LARRY JOHNSON, RYAN GRANT, MICHEAL TURNER, even Brian WESTBROOK and MARION BArber must I go on...so #44 being third on the chart means sh!t...ANDY keep dissecting the TEAM like I do, winning isn't enough, the great teams KICK ASS 90's Cowgirls 80's 49ers kicked ass, we have a chance to start a dynasty and bringing fear into the game is a plus...teams should be scared of our offense and right now i don't think they are

and you said GILBRIDE won us a lot of games? which ones? which games we won on great play calling? its either our Defense dominates or ELI puts together a late HURRY-up offense type drive in which he calls those plays....you have to name me the game(s) he called great...he fvcking sux, i can beleive you said that sh!t Kelvin Gilbride? dude your sick lol Kevin Gilbride is one of the worst playcallers even...i would rather have RAY HANDLEY lol i said RAY HANDLEY fuck GILBRIDE

Nature said...

and for the record, why we won?

0 turnovers
0 sacks allowed

5 sacks
4 picks

simple

FUCK GILBRIDE!!! where is HANDLEY?

Nature said...

Post-NFL life
Ray Handley was officially fired on December 30, 1992, and replaced by former Denver Broncos head coach Dan Reeves. Following his departure, Handley would disappear from the NFL and the public eye. He now resides in the Lake Tahoe, California area.

we need to get him on the line Gilbride is a tool.

Mitch said...

Must you bring up Ray Handley I get agita every time I hear that name.

Giants at Tampa Bay - Wildcard round. Not a flashy game, but EXCELLENT play calling did it. Wish I had a link to the highlights, but Troy Aikman actually blows Gilbride verbally for his play calling.

PD2LISN said...

Nobody is saying anything about it, so I had to leave a quick comment. Was anybody else jumping up and down after that MONSTER whack Kenny Phillips put on Washington??!! I could care less about the penalty (which was bullshit), as it served notice to the league that this guy is a hitter!

Nature said...

i think he hit MOORE but yeah the was lovely, thats what i was saying during the half time post, BUTLER's range is limited this kid flies to the ball, i say fvck it and put em in because BUTLER makes some rookie mistakes at times...and that BUCS game was more about the D-fense to me

Unknown said...

Gilbride is doing a creditable job. The team is doing a creditable job. All aspects of this team reguire improvement. Plex has to change his attitude before he becomes a cancer. What the heck was that play in the 4th Q when its 4th and 1. They call a TO and then look like a chinese fire drill. Is that Gilbride?

xtian said...

i do like the concept of balanced attack, but i agree that gilbride is too predictable. against lesser teams this does not matter. ie: after an incomplete pass on first down (which is less predictable than a run) gilbride usually calls the standard run. with average or less teams the giants get 4 to 8 yards making it a manageable 3rd down, but against pitt they only get 1 or 2 yards which leaves a tough 3rd down. being predictable is not always bad because execution does come into play. also in football it tells the other team it does not matter because you cannot stop us anyway. and that is disheartening.

btw, the reason bradshaw didn't get into this game offensively is because he fumbled twice last game and the giants could not afford that this game since he only gets spot duty. but don't worry ward has been doing great and i expect bradshaw will start to see more time soon--he better!

lastly, while i enjoy the passion of some of you, i do get annoyed at the irrational gilbride bashing or what seems to be out-of-proportion negativity on him and the giants. it reminds me of a gf of mine who rooted for the giants but hated phil simms. if he completed 5 passes in a row and missed 1 she would scream about how horrible he sucked and wished he was off the team. i could not understand it; i root for everyone on the giants. this is not to say i don't have favorites, i do. i guess, i wonder if people like my gf have to have a person to hate to throw all their negativity on, and it happens to be gilbride now. if gilbride left, someone else would get it. something to think about! and even more outside of football.

Yes I was jumping up & down with that hit by Phillips. And for the record he led with his shoulder not his helmet. If that was a penalty then where was the flag when Steve Smith went deep and cought the bomb but lost it when the DB made a helmet to helmet hit!

bruno...

On that 4th and 1 Eli knew that the play wouldn't work and didn't have the proper people in the game to change it effectively so he took the penalty. ( He said this after the game ) Eli is a real "cool guy" under fire. And then on 4th & 6 he lays out a picture perfect pass to Toomer.

Now who would we rather have, Eli or Ben?....well here's my take...

Manning played lights out in the 4th QTR in the Giants' 21-14 smashmouth victory while the defense pummeled Roethlisberger relentlessly until his fourth interception with 1:24 remaining decided two things: The Giants are better than the Steelers and Manning is better than Roethlisberger. It helped that Manning was not sacked once and the Giants put Big Ben down five times.
In a playoff-type atmosphere, the Giants turned in a performance reminiscent of last year's playoff run. When they got a chance late, they grabbed it. The defense was ferocious, the offense functional when it had to be, and the overall intensity was very high. Now if they can only straighten out that receiver of theirs.

Nature said...

hey XTIAN

do you know GILBRIDE's history as a coordinator...he has always sucked

I am the main guy bashing GILBRIDE and it wont stop until we get MORE productive on offense...

also when watching the games notice how many time per game ELI switches the play for a big gain oppose to GILBRIDE's original call, and answer me this also we have an AVERAGE of 2-3 delay of game or close time out because the plays come in slow...how is that? KILDRIVE!!! if i didnt know any better I would think he was trying make JOHN CARNEY the single season record holder for FG's made...fuck GILBRIDE he is the worst REDZONE play caller in the game...

and as far as liking certain players I like the GIANTS, f the name on the back, im never loyal to a PLAYER (L.T is the best ever)but if he left and played for someone else he would of been LT the crackhead....but he wore the BIG BLUE and thats who my loyalty is with. i never root against us but GILBRIDE sux ass hands down...

Re: Gilbride:

I actually think that Offensive play-calling is this team's greatest weakness. I agree completely this this post. Gilbride needs to take a step back and examine his play-calling and think about how he is attacking opposing Defenses. The lack of play-action passing on the goal-line is simply inexcusable. Running BJacobs 12 straight times into the line is simply ridiculous. When Fox cut to the other games and showed highlights, its seemed like every team in the league had done some sort of play-action or a different play at the goal line (ie did anyone see the hand-off to the fullback in the Chargers-Saints game?) - so why is is that Gilbride can't dial up another play on the goal line?

It is so goddamn frustrating to watch him play call. The execution was there (with the exception of a small # of dropped passes) but the play calling just drives me absolutely bonkers.

I wasn't picking on Eli alone on that 4th and 1 play. U did give me something I hadn't thought about. Eli changing the play. Thanks. I will look at the tape again but before he threw that pass(perfect pass) he looked very unsure of himself a little like last year. I hope that someone on the Giants can get Plex to shape up.

PS:

Seems like Coughlin is frustrated with Gilbride too. Note Pam Oliver's comments that Coughlin specifically noted that the plays had to come in from the sideline faster.

I was just as confused as you when that 4th & 1 happened "live", and it wasn't until after the game that I understood his explanation. I'm just amazed that Eli seems to be so calm when the game is on the line & getting crazier with the pressure of the game, loudness of the fans etc. He seems to have a knack for doing the right thing at the right time.

cody...

Good point about Pam Oliver I didn't think much of it at the time....but I think I was laughing too much when she actually forgot what she wanted to say on the air. Maybe she got her information a little late from the sidelines as well....lol....

Giants are number 3 in the league in offense, and 4th in defense. Gilbride isn't the best playcaller, and the delays are killing me, but he's doing something right. you dont get 378.9 ypg with bad play calling.
I'm not supporting Gilbride but get off his back. He does make good play calls, (Steve Smith goin deep on 2nd down). If it ain't broke, dont fix it. All I read on here is how Gilbride sucks and Bradshaw needs to be in the game more. If I were to start a team i wouldn't pick Gilbride but I wouldnt fire him for someone else if we're 6-1

Ward is averaging 6.2 ypc and Jacobs has 4.9 ypc and Bradshaw had 2 fumbles last game. We are Number 1 in the league in rushing, why would you change it up. I love Bradshaw and he could be great one day, but Jacobs and Ward are great right now. Look at Grant, he was good half a year and now he's not doin to much (3.4 ypc). Stick with the proven ones until they arent good. When Jacobs starts to slow down (dont go by this game, Pitt stops everyone from running) then get Bradshaw the ball, but for now im gonna cheer when Jacobs gets the ball bc a LB is about to get mowed over

My mother had a saying in English, derived from a Yiddish one, Called Throwing a Hate on Some one, and that is seemingly what you are doing with Kevin Gilbride. I am not the maven that you are in terms of stategy, but I thin the from what I have read about Tom Coughlin, if he dodn't like the stratgy he would change it. An fina;lly, As I write this comment I notice that nature comment about Mr. Gilbride are really offensive.

you aren't the only guy bashing gilbride, but it seems that no matter what he does you are calling him all sorts of heinous hateful names. he isn't that bad--don't take that as saying he's great or anything--the giants offense is way up there in stats. he does not deserve the venom you are giving him. i would suggest to stick to examples of the bad calls you thought he made and leave the name-calling and anger out which only serves to take away from you and makes the focus that instead of your insight which is considerable.

just because eli switches the play doesn't mean it was a bad call orignially; it means eli sees the defense and thinks some other play is better. [peyton changes the calls all the time.] btw, i heard someone [ex-qb?] say that eli surveys the entire field whereas ben does half the field, but that could be a function of their offensive system.

jacobs was a 2nd-string rb too. same with tiki and joe morris and rodney hampton... lots of examples, huh?

good catch on that getting the plays in on time point. side note: imho, pam oliver has long been the hottest female football reporter.

I was at the game on Sunday. Great physical game, great staduim, great fans. Good gmen fans turnout.....about 75/25 which isn't bad for Pittsburgh.

Gilbride is a bum.....plain and simple, we all know this so let's move on.

Officiating was horrible. Kenny Phillips will be out of league in a few years cause he just hits to hard for the "soft" NFL. Phillips, Kehl, Tuck and Kiwi were awesome! That is the future.
